The University of Leicester chose to refurbish what was College Hall, a 1960s built catered student accommodation, into College Court to make use of an interesting building in an attractive location without detriment to the original vision of the architects. The intention was to develop a modern high quality residential training and conferencing centre which would generate additional income and contribute to the development of the university.
The project saw the refurbishment of 123 bedrooms across five blocks, both teaching and breakout rooms, dining facilities for both residents and guests as well as a lounge and bar, all completed to a high standard.
Acting as Project Manager with the university’s requirements in mind regarding the maintenance of the original architects’ vision, RPS worked closely with the conservation officer and English Heritage to ensure that such matters as the internal floors, fireplaces and external fabric and glazing met the listed requirements, whilst at the same time bringing this 1960’s building into the 21st century.
The building achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating during its assessment.
‘College Court is a wonderful example of a listed building carefully transformed for a new use. Thoughtful and sensitive interventions ensure the elegance and charm of the ensemble continue in its new life.’
