This project involved the construction of a new state-of-the-art research, development and assembly facility at Ansty Business Park, Coventry; the birthplace of the next generation of London Taxi, a no-compromise, range-extended hybrid electric Black Cab.
Since Geely Group acquired The London Taxi Company (LTC), its commitment has been to continually improve design and quality, investing more than £200 million over a five-year plan. The vision behind this development was to see the iconic London Black Cab in all major cities across the world. RPS was appointed by LTC as project manager, cost consultant and principal designer to assist with this vision, by setting up a new, eco-friendly state-of-the-art facility.
Now LTC’s new headquarters, it included a substantial research and development department, a supply chain team, global sales and marketing as well as central administrative functions necessary to support the assembly operations for the new vehicle. The assembly operations on site were tailored to low volume production using skilled labour and, as such, LTC had ambitious plans for a total workforce to exceed 1,000. The operations at Ansty are clean in nature, generating nothing significant by way of noise pollution or air emissions.
Building this facility required close programme and budget management! Add to that incorporating future expansion plans to maximise production, relocating amphibians to purpose-built habitats and allowing contractors early access … a “hands-on” approach was essential.
We introduced increasingly inspired techniques to ensure customer satisfaction, everything from “Build-it-in-a-day” workshops and key developments “Dashboards”, to change management protocol and risk and opportunity registers, to site visits to “Value Engineer” design solutions and an extensive pre-qualification process to reduce tenders.
The new facility is approximately 21.5 acres, offering a total of 25,000m2 of floor space with over 20,000m2 in the main production/assembly hall and nearly 5,000m2 in ancillary offices, reception/showroom and staff welfare facilities.
