RPS advised Mouchel Babcock Education, appointed by London Borough of Hackney to deliver Hackney Building Schools for the Future programme (BSF), on the redevelopment of the former Cardinal Pole Catholic School site to provide a new 800 student free school.
The project represented a significant challenge balancing the educational needs of the school against the need to preserve the historic significance of the Grade II listed building, the character of the Conservation Area and the amenity of local residents. A key element of the planning case was the justification for development of this historic building in order to meet educational need within this section of the Borough.
We were brought onto the project halfway through the pre-application process with a brief to provide advice on both the development proposals and the planning strategy. RPS advised the client through this process and achieved planning permission and listed building consent in line with the development programme.
