RPS is supporting Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine with Safety Management support for the design and manufacture of their Astute Submarine Platform Management System for Boats 4 to 7. This includes performing and documenting the safety analysis in accordance with the requirements of BS EN 61508 for a SIL 2 System, and producing the following documentation: safety management plan; through-life system safety case report (and underpinning safety assessment reports); software safety case report (and underpinning software component safety assessments); reliability report and hazard log.
As part of the day to day safety management of the project, RPS conducts the safety analysis of the PMS via formal HAZOP studies, failure modes and effects analysis, fault tree and analysis, and hazard identification through Structure What-If Techniques (SWIFT). RPS also performs an assessment of all potential safety issues, such as the safety impact of failed software tests. RPS has also delivered safety training to the project staff, and is involved in the assessment of project team competencies. RPS organises and facilitates the project safety committee meetings, including the production of terms of reference and meeting minutes.
