RPS has been providing a range of services to support to Scottish Water as part of our clean water infrastructure frameworks for over 10 years.
Clean Water Hydraulic Modelling
We are currently undertaking a programme of model construction and calibration to increase Scottish Water’s model coverage comprising 28 zones/models, with approximately 5,500km of main and 225,000 customers.
We utilise models to help provide an improved understanding of water network operation and performance as well as to support the development of operational and capital investments.
The types of hydraulic analysis projects undertaken include:
Assessment of mains configuration and sizing options as part of the design of mains replacement schemes.
Understanding the impact and risks of service reservoir rationalisation programmes.
Age of water modelling to support investigations into Water Quality failures and identify changes to storage regimes.
Investigations into DMA operability issues and redesign of boundaries.
Optioneering studies into resilience requirements to allow abandonment of Water Treatment Works.
Support to mains cleaning programmes.
RPS has been working with Scottish Water since 2014 to understand and improve water quality within their water infrastructure network through a programme of mains flushing.
We typically undertake unidirectional flushing as the preferred method of flushing the water mains of a water distribution system. This is accomplished by closing specified valves and by flushing strategically located hydrants. By closing specified valves, the velocity of water through the mains is controlled to the minimum re-suspension velocity.
It is generally considered to be more effective at removing sediments than conventional flushing and also uses less water.
The sequence of the flushing design will enable clean water to be carried forward into each downstream section.
Each week, approximately 50km of mains are flushed by RPS teams, improving the quality of Scottish Waters customers’ potable water. Since we began the project almost 4000km of main has been flushed by RPS.
