The major redevelopment of one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings, The Grand development is a prominent commercial/retail/hotel site covering an area of 10,000m2. It is listed as Grade 2a and has gone through many option studies to determine its best use and configuration.
This 180-bedroom hotel is part of the major redevelopment, and will feature conferencing and banqueting facilities, a restaurant, bar and spa as well as the city’s first roof-top infinity pool.
In addition, separate office and retail accommodation have been provided as part of the development, and the ornate Victorian Ballroom will be brought back to its former glory whereby functions for up to 500 people will be catered for.
RPS was appointed by Hortons Estate to provide a full range of services for the development, including mechanical, electrical, public health, transportation, fire and acoustics.
As the building is over 150 years old and has eight storeys with many half landings, the incorporation of lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation has been carefully developed and a great level of detail has been required between all of the design teams to enable the spaces to comply with current building standards and regulations whilst retaining the authentic Victorian feel and ambiance.
The Grand Hotel, Birmingham was recently announced as the winner for the Commercial category at the West Midlands RICS awards 2017.
