Energy from Waste

RPS holds a strong track record in delivering multi-disciplinary consultancy services to the Energy from Waste (EfW) sector. We provide best-in-class solutions to take a project from conception, through to planning, construction and into successful operation. We work closely with a number of waste management companies, technology providers and support specialist contractors in the procurement and delivery of EfW projects.

RPS has acted as planning consultants on a variety of EfW projects ranging in size from small scale gasification plants to the largest facilities with through puts of 750,000 tpa. In addition, our in house environmental teams have produced numerous Environmental Impact Assessments and permitting applications.

Our Architecture and Civil/Structural Engineering design teams have produced a number of complex and technically challenging designs of EfW facilities across the country. Supported by our Building Services Engineers, Fire Engineers and CDM Consultants, RPS offers a truly unique multi-disciplinary design service within the EfW sector.

John Clayton

John is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 24 years’ experience. He leads a large civil and structural engineering team, specialising in the design of waste and energy facilities. John is highly skilled in the co-ordination of complex schemes in busy operational environments, with demanding programmes, on fast track projects and on those sites with difficult ground conditions involving remediation or demolition.

John has excellent communication and negotiation skills which have proven essential when dealing with key technology suppliers and challenging their designs to bring economies to the civil and structural solutions, yet still deliver the performance goals. He is also skilled in providing a technical interface between the sub and main contractor when dealing with complex temporary works.

Tom Hill

Tom is a Chartered Architect and he has been involved in the detailed design and delivery of several EfW facilities throughout the UK, with experience of working for both a contractor and within a design consultancy. His experience includes Suffolk EfW which won Civil Engineering Project of the Year at the 2015 BCI Awards and more recently the REnescience Northwich EfW for Dong Energy.

Since its inception, Tom has had comprehensive experience of working with BIM. As Professional Head of BIM, Tom is responsible for overseeing and driving forward its use across offices throughout the UK and has undertaken staff training of both Autodesk Revit and Navisworks.

Dan Smyth

Dan has wide experience in the waste sector, encompassing numerous EfW facilities using mass burn, gasification and other treatment technologies across the UK. This has included EfW plants in Runcorn, Suffolk, Dunbar, Exeter, Grimsby, MBT facilities in Northwich (REnescience), Derby, Dorset, AD facilities throughout England and Wales, projects in Ireland, waste wood chip biomass power stations, and acting as technical adviser to local authorities on waste contracts.

Jennifer Stringer

Jennifer has over 20 years’ experience in providing environmental compliance support and has worked directly on more than 25 EfW schemes within the UK and abroad. Her knowledge of the EfW sector spans a range of technologies, waste types and scale of facility and has included some of the largest schemes in the UK. She has in depth understanding of BAT having provided robust supporting assessments for all of the applications she has supported.

In addition to her permitting role, Jennifer has project managed Environmental Statements for several EfW schemes, supported waste operators throughout the PFI waste procurement process and provided advice to councils in their contract delivery process.
