RPS has over 40 years’ experience in the aviation sector. Our multidisciplinary capability enables us to provide a full range of planning, design, project management, health and safety and environmental services at every stage of an aviation project.

At the planning stage we are able to offer strategic advice including advising on relevant consenting regimes within the aviation planning policy framework and managing the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process. Our masterplan projects include airport developments and airport cities.

In conjunction with our airport planning and EIA teams, we provide specialist technical services including: health impact assessment, air quality, noise, flood risk, ecology, site investigation and landscape and visual impact assessments.

Our design experience covers: airside/landside infrastructure, airfield ground lighting, airfreight facilities, business aviation buildings, cargo/passenger terminals, maintenance hangars, surface water and pollution control facilities.

We are able to provide extensive health and safety compliance support, including; fire risk, legionella / water quality and asbestos consultancy.

Our integrated approach allows us to offer tailored solutions, helping airports to balance their commercial goals with their responsibilities to the environment, health and safety and local communities. Our experience extends to international, regional and military airports.

Geoff Dewick

With 25 years’ experience in the aviation sector, including seven years at East Midlands Airport (EMA), Geoff brings in-depth knowledge of airport operations, landside environment and designing engineering projects for aviation clients. Given his time airport-side, he appreciates the challenges involved with design and construction at operational airports, the drivers in the development of airports and commercial goals. This knowledge has allowed Geoff to ensure that design delivery is managed effectively within multidisciplinary teams to meet client needs.

Geoff’s previous experience includes: Project Director responsible for runway rehabilitation schemes at Belfast International, Cambridge, City of Derry, Dublin, Exeter and Shannon Airports plus Project Director for the design of FBO facilities at London Luton Airport, this included new aprons, hangars and FBO buildings.

Geoff was Engineering Director for the delivery of the £80m masterplan at Guernsey Airport which involved rehabilitation of the airside infrastructure. He is currently Framework Manager for Gatwick Airport, Ports of Jersey and Welsh Government Frameworks.

While at EMA Geoff was responsible for delivery of all airside and landside projects which included: runway extension, new control tower, cargo facility, car parks and business park development.

Kester Purslow

Kester has over 15 years’ experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams in the provision of a range of airport and aviation buildings including new terminal buildings, cargo hubs, hangars and FBOs. Kester’s experience ranges from feasibility and master planning through the design process to project completion and his clients include MAG Property, Cambridge Airport, Stobart Air and Gatwick Airport.

Notably, Kester has directed many projects for MAG Property, at Stansted, Bournemouth, East Midlands and Manchester Airports. Including the award winning DHL sortation hub at East Midlands Airport. The hub is a complex facility that required careful detailing and considered design; it comprises a 40,000m2 unobstructed warehouse space and truck canopy, and 20,000m2 of office/ancillary areas spanning three floors.

Kester was Project Director for the concept, masterplanning and implementation of the new Airport City South World Logistics Hub at Manchester Airport. The project consists of the masterplanning of a new 80 acre distribution park located to the south west of Manchester Airport.

Currently, Kester heads up the provision of architecture design services at Gatwick Airport, via the framework agreement.

Dan Smyth

With over 20 years’ experience Dan has taken a leading role in preparing DCO applications for NSIPs, including some of the most complex developments in the UK. He is an experienced Expert Witness in the areas of air quality and human health, climate change and environmental permitting. As a board member of RPS’ Environment & Infrastructure Group, Dan is responsible for strategic direction and major projects.

Dan was seconded to Gatwick’s R2 team, preparing strategic submissions to the Airports Commission, EAC, DfT and Defra for a second runway. Dan helped prepare the DCO programme, advising on stakeholder engagement, PINS advisory services, compulsory land acquisition, health and environmental commitments and led RPS’ response to the Airports Commission Sustainability Appraisal Framework Report.

Dan acted as Project Director for the carbon and Health Impact Assessment input to the London City Airport Development Programme and the HIAs for Belfast City Airport and Birmingham Airport and is currently working on Birmingham Airport’s Masterplan.

Angela Schembri

Angela has 17 years’ experience in private sector planning. She is an accomplished planning practitioner providing strategic and expert planning advice and co-ordinates large project teams.

Angela is expert in aviation planning and is very familiar with the planning consenting process for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs). She is currently advising RiverOak Strategic Partners with their plans to reopen Manston Airport as an international air freight hub. The project is a NSIP and Angela is assisting with preparation of the Development Consent Order (DCO) application that will be made to Planning Inspectorate. Angela is also part of the consultant team advising Gatwick Airport Limited (GAL) with their aspirations for a second runway. She prepared documents on behalf of GAL that were submitted to the Airports Commission who examined the need for additional UK airport capacity. Additionally, Angela has worked with BAA to advise on increasing passenger numbers at Stansted Airport.

Mike Rose

Mike has 24 years’ experience in Health and Safety risk management, specialising in legionella and water quality. Mike has management responsibility for delivery of health and safety and fire safety, including key account management within the aviation sector. Mike has extensive international expertise and continues to deliver training and specialist consultancy advice.
