Health Impact Assessment (HIA)

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a multidisciplinary process intended to facilitate more health-conscious planning and decision making by investigating, assessing and addressing three broad domains of public health:

Health protection;

Health promotion; and

Health care.

RPS is a leading provider of planning-focussed HIA with an unrivalled catalogue of project experience, ranging from urban expansion, road, rail and airport infrastructure, waste management, grid connections and windfarms, through to new nuclear power stations and the development of sector-specific best practice guidance.

We have more than a decade of experience providing HIA services, both standalone and as part of EIA, and are perfectly placed to help our clients meet the population and health requirements of the 2017 EIA Regulations with appropriately scoped, effectively communicated, proportionate assessments.

We have particular strengths in the rapidly developing evidence base concerning air pollutant and noise impacts on health, aided by RPS’ multidisciplinary approach; our health impact team works closely with environmental specialists in these areas. We have also assisted many clients in assessing and addressing public concerns regarding electromagnetic fields from electricity transmission. Our health impact team is experienced and confident in community engagement and preparing health action plans to maximise health promotion.
