Asbestos

RPS provides asbestos consultancy services to public and private sector clients throughout Ireland.

RPS provides objective and cost-effective asbestos consultancy services including pre-refurbishment / demolition surveys, management surveys, asbestos management, monitoring, development and maintenance of asbestos registers, project management and health & safety.

We have surveyed and managed asbestos in portfolios ranging from single units to multiple properties spread across the country. In addition to surveying over 200 schools for the OPW, RPS has worked with other clients on asbestos related services including health boards, local authorities, VECs, government departments and transport authorities.

Clare County Council

RPS has been engaged by Clare County Council to advise on potential asbestos contamination at nine sites.

RPS has been engaged by Clare County Council to provide expert consultancy services relating to potential asbestos contamination at nine sites in the Kilkee and Kilrush areas of County Clare. RPS procured and managed the site investigation contract to determine the extent of the potential asbestos contamination, including the presence of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and fibres within the soil matrix. Extensive air monitoring was also required. RPS is currently developing remediation options for each site in line with legislative requirements, best practice, and health & safety practices. The project involves liaison with key stakeholders including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) and the Health Service Executive (HSE).

RPS Managing National Asbestos Management Project for schools

Since 2011, RPS has been managing a national asbestos management project in schools throughout Ireland. The Office of Public Works (OPW) appointed RPS along with two other consultants to complete asbestos surveys in schools identified for refurbishment. The surveys are carried out in cooperation with two other consultants and schools are assigned to each consultant on a rotational basis, therefore evenly distributing the work involved.

The RPS responsibilities have included:

Refurbishment asbestos surveys to identify Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs)

Preparation of reports and removal specifications for the asbestos

Follow up supervision of the removal works

An air test and approval / clearance of the works

Crampton Buildings Asbestos Survey

Crampton Buildings Asbestos and Lead in Paint Survey

Dublin City Council

RPS carried out a pre refurbishment asbestos survey and a ‘lead in paint’ sampling survey of the historic Crampton Buildings in Temple Bar.

Crampton buildings is a historically significant building located in the popular tourist area of Temple Bar area in Dublin city. The Local Authority, Dublin City Council, manage the building which is currently used for social housing with some commercial units on the ground floor. Dublin City Council are currently in the process of a regeneration project for the building and are refurbishing the 53 apartments within the complex.

RPS are contracted to carry out detailed asbestos refurbishment surveys on each apartment and in external areas of the complex as well as a comprehensive sampling survey of painted surfaces for the presence of lead. RPS in Dublin are managing the project and are providing on site surveyors to carry out the assessment. RPS laboratories in Manchester are carrying out analysis of the asbestos and lead samples.

Office of Public Works

RPS carried out a comprehensive asbestos management survey and an asbestos pre-refurbishment survey of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation & Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in Kildare Street.

RPS in Dublin carried out a comprehensive asbestos management survey of 23-28 Kildare Street which consists of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and innovation and the Department of Arts Heritage and the Gealtacht.

The project involved the following:

An asbestos management of the entire building including the roof area

A pre-refurbishment survey of over 150 heating access panels within the building

Preparation of reports, health and safety documentation and removal specifications for asbestos removal works.


The project was undertaken out-of-hours in order to allow normal occupation of the building to continue throughout the survey timeline. RPS in Dublin carried out on site surveying work and samples were analysed in the RPS laboratories in Manchester.
