RPS carried out the Mechanical, Electrical and Lift Design for two major Hospitals at Whiston and St Helens. This consisted of an Acute Hospital at Whiston and one of the largest Diagnostic Centres in the country at St Helens.

The new Whiston Hospital consists of 860 beds and comprises a six-storey development with plant rooms, each housing ventilation plant, electrical switch rooms, heating calorifier stations and DHWS calorifiers.

A new 12 Mw LTHW energy centre has been provided incorporating 3-6 Mw boilers, space for a 1 mW CHP plant and 3 standby generator sets.

The main services distribution is from the energy centre via a new service corridor at level 1 and with vertical risers at each departmental interface along the Hospital Street providing vertical distribution to the departments on the floors above.

The departments within the new building include Accident and Emergency, Medical Wards, Gynaecology Wards, Paediatric Wards, Surgical Wards, Orthopaedic Wards, Plastic and Burns Wards, 10 Operating Theatres, Out Patients Department, Oncology and Administration/Storage Areas.

The majority of the areas are ventilated where possible by natural means in accordance with the Health Building Notes and Hospital Technical Memorandums.Additional mechanical cooling has been provided where the peak temperature may rise above 29°C.

In addition to the new build element, modifications to the existing building have provided HSDU, Pathology, Mortuary and Catering Facilities
