Case Studies

AES Power Ltd

AES Power Ltd

Cornwall

RPS completed an Environmental Management System Gap analysis for AES Indian Queens Power Station.

The Gap analysis aimed to provide useful planning tools for a peaking power station which is seeking certification to ISO14001. Subsequently, support was provided to implement an EMS in accordance with the requirements of ISO14001. A key issue for the site was the low manning levels; the site operates a shift system with a only single engineer running the plant at any one time and with a Plant Manager and Accountant onsite during normal day time hours which required careful allocation of responsibilities and care in audit scheduling.

Ongoing EMS audit support was initially provided to enable independency of auditing of the system at the site, although via change in parent company this was subsequently handed over to a centralised function.

Countryside Properties Ltd

Countryside Properties Ltd

South East

RPS completed an initial environmental review for Countryside Properties, the developer of housing, commercial property and recreational facilities.

RPS has been working for this major house builder for over 12 years and undertook an initial environmental review, which lead to the drafting and implementation of a Corporate Policy.

Subsequently, we have assisted the company in implementing the Policy through various initiatives including assisting with the successful implementation to ISO 14001 for the company and its subsidiaries covering all activities from land acquisition, planning and design through to the on site construction process.

We have retained to undertake an annual system audit as well as monthly site audits. In addition, RPS has also verified the company’s Annual Environmental, Social & Ethical report since 2001 which includes full audits of construction site activities as part of the verification process.

De Beers UK Ltd

De Beers UK Ltd

Central London and Maidenhead

RPS implemented BS EN ISO 14001 on behalf of De Beers UK, the sales and marketing arm of De Beers, the international diamond company.

RPS was commissioned to successfully assist in the implementation of BS EN ISO 14001, including undertaking a Gap Analysis, identification of significance evaluation of aspects and impacts, defining objectives and targets, providing training and general implementation of the EMS.

RPS continues to be retained to undertake internal audits and assist the company in maintaining its certification.

Depuy International and Vistakon Ltd

Depuy International and Vistakon Ltd

Sunbury, Blackpool and Leeds

RPS completed site specific legal compliance audits to ensure companies complied with parent company policy.

Depuy International and Vistakon are part of the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) group of companies and are distribution centres and small scale manufacturing for pharmaceutical product lines and includes warehousing and a call centre with sales and marketing.

J&J as a whole does not look to achieve certification of its sites under ISO 14001 and/or OHAS 18001 but operates a bespoke system which follows the principles of the standards the Management Awareness Action Review System (MAARS). As part of the implementation of this system, RPS has been commissioned to undertake site specific legal compliance audits of selected sites to ensure implementation of the group wide system.

NEWLINCS Energy from Waste

NEWLINCS Energy from Waste

Lincolnshire

RPS ensured site wide compliance with the Energy from Waste facilities environmental permit and issues.

RPS assisted with a variety of projects relating to compliance with the site’s permit and other environmental issues. This has included undertaking a compliance audit in relation to the sites monitoring and reporting requirements required by the permit to operate. A site audit was completed and audit report identifying recommendations and improvements produced.

Tate and Lyle Sugars

Tate and Lyle Sugars

London

RPS supported Tate and Lyle as they developed and updated their current systems.

Tate and Lyle had an existing informal Environmental Management System which had been developed in accordance with the BS7750 at their main Thames Refinery site and were seeking to develop and update this system in accordance with the requirements of ISO14001 and their environmental permit.

Initially, RPS provided support to the site to produce an updated initial site review and subsequently developed a programme for the site to further develop their systems in accordance with ISO14001. The site was not intending to seeking certification to the standard but to operate a compliant internal system.
