Assessing the likely impact on the existing sewers of proposed new development.

RPS supported Thames Water in the assessment of the impact likely to be caused by new development within their area. RPS has provided support in over 250 proposals over the last 5 years. Assessing impact involves site survey work, assessing historical records and computer network modelling using InfoWorks. If the proposed development is found to adversely affect the existing network then solutions need to be proposed.

Planning regulations mean that Water Companies have very limited time to assess and determine their requirements for developers. Because RPS is able to offer a full solution from site work to high end consultancy we can meet these targets and support our clients. The assessment can include InfoWorks model building to add detail to an existing client model or constructing a completely new model of a small town or village which is then available for use by the client.

Survey of large diameter Victorian sewers in central Liverpool.

Liverpool has a Victorian sewer system that now forms a critical part of a much enlarged system. RPS was asked by UU to carry out a challenging CCTV sewer of a large diameter brick sewer in the Deysbrook area. The pipe is over 2m high in places and continually flowing. Due to the size of the sewer and the flows, RPS had to develop a specially designed float to carry the CCTV camera.

RPS’ experience in sewer entry and CCTV meant that we were able to overcome all the hurdles and produce a complete survey of the old sewer. Planning included stringent health and safety procedures, rescue plans and monitoring of long and short term weather forecasts. Condition was found to be good and the quality of the Victorian design and workmanship should stand United Utilities in good stead for years to come.

United Utilities needed to investigate the performance of overflows in and around Eccles Sewage Treatment Works.

RPS was asked to carry out a comprehensive survey that included manhole, CCTV and confined space man entry sewer surveys.

The man entry survey was carried out in a large diameter brick sewer in a critical location. CCTV surveys by others had failed to give the detail required on this critical asset and the client required a visual and photographic inspection. The inspection, called a traverse, required a detailed safety assessment and plan. It was successfully completed with a 5 man specialist team and the client was able to use the records and photographic evidence as the benchmark for assessing any future deterioration.

Survey of a large number of Sewage Pumping Stations

Working for Thames Water, RPS carried out full surveys of over 100 Sewage Pumping Stations. These were required to update Thames Water’s asset records and to form the basis of a review of condition and operational suitability. The surveys included tests to establish the pump outputs in various operational states, comments on condition and surveys of the pump sump and station compound. The results were presented as a report including pump performance calculations and AutoCad drawings.

Having the data for a large number of pumping stations in a standard format enabled the client to prioritise capital investment decisions, deal with maintenance issues and address urgent equipment or capacity shortfalls.
