Securing accreditations with a cost-effective approach

RPS has extensive experience developing sustainability strategies and preparing sustainability statements for significant UK projects across a range of industry sectors.

Our team adopts a holistic and dynamic approach to sustainability recognising that it has many cross-cutting themes which are often borne out in Planning, Design, Commercial, Environmental, Technical and other project choices. Therefore, the sustainability of a project should not be judged in isolation and it is essential that interrelated project decisions are captured through a logical and transparent assessment and reporting mechanism.

Our sustainability team works with other RPS specialists in Planning, EIA, HIA, Transport and other environmental disciplines to enable us to undertake the project sustainability appraisal in a technically consistent manner. We work with wider project teams to agree sustainability options.

BREEAM & Code for Sustainable Homes

RPS is a licensed assessor organisation with trained, qualified assessors in a range of BREEAM service areas and the Code for Sustainable Homes. We also have BREEAM Accredited Professionals, who can advise design teams on the most effective methods of delivering BREEAM buildings.

RPS has extensive experience in undertaking BREEAM assessments and providing commercially focused consultancy advice throughout all stages of the design and development process.

The formal assessment process is undertaken after the planning process, following the two stage process of design stage followed by post construction assessment. RPS can also assess buildings during the management and operational phase, where required.

Case Studies

Green Incubator

Green Incubator, South Tyneside

RPS undertook the BREEAM assessment for the three-storey, mixed-use development which was centred on sustainability.

We worked as part of a project team to bring this commercial development to life. Our engineers provided mechanical and electrical design services including the energy strategy which was fundamental to achieving the highest score at assessment stage.

We provided advice as the BREEAM Accredited Professional, and then undertook the BREEAM Offices assessment and achieved an Outstanding Rating. The project was subsequently crowned winner of the BREEAM Offices Award at EcoBuild 2012, with the highest ‘Outstanding’ rating for an office building during 2011.

Hinkley Point C

Hinkley Point C, Somerset

EDF Energy

RPS developed the sustainability material in support of the Development Consent Order (DCO) application for Hinkley Point C.

The sustainability appraisal was based on criteria that were consistent with policy aims of the National Policy Statement for Nuclear Energy, as well as other relevant local policies, EDF Energy’s corporate sustainability aspirations and wider stakeholder expectations.

Our role on this project involved working across the project teams in a multi-disciplinary environment of planners, EIA and technical consultants, construction project managers, communication and procurement teams, and EDF Energy’s corporate sustainability staff in order to identify, evaluate and record sustainability opportunities that were available through the project. Working with all parties, RPS was instrumental in developing an effective and balanced sustainability statement for the DCO application.

Mamhilad Park

Johnsey Estates Ltd

RPS provided sustainability consultancy services in support of the proposed development of Mamhilad Park in Torfaen.

It is proposed to redevelop this former Park Davis site, Nylon Spinners factory and Mamhilad buildings together to deliver a mixed use development.

RPS was commissioned to provide Sustainability and Energy consultancy services in support of the proposed development. We undertook a Strategic Sustainability Assessment of the proposed masterplan. The aim of the Strategic Sustainability Assessment was to identify how the principles of sustainability had been applied in the context of developing the proposals, how they were reflected in the proposed masterplan and supporting Design Statements, and how sustainability will be delivered throughout the lifetime of this development. This included advice on incorporating sustainability principles at the masterplanning stage, and the feasibility of achieving high levels under Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM Assessments.

North Solihull Regeneration

North Solihull Regeneration

Bellway Homes

RPS has a framework agreement with Bellway Homes to provide Code for Sustainable Homes and Energy Assessment services in support of the ‘Regenerating North Solihull’ Project.

Regenerating North Solihull is a 15-year project to transform the three wards of Chelmsley Wood, Smith's Wood and Kingshurst & Fordbridge by improving homes, shops, schools, health and community facilities, transport, the environment and creating jobs. Bellway Homes is the lead developer and partner, and RPS is providing all the CSH Assessments and SAP Assessments for this long-term project.

To date, we have completed CSH and SAP Assessments for approx. 170 dwellings, with a further 120 dwellings currently under assessment.
