Clem’s cycle shelter project takes shape
Teenager Clem Beardmore has completed his mission to improve bike storage at his school, thanks to community and professional support.
Clem, a 15-year-old pupil at Belvoir Priory Academy in Bottesford, embarked on an ambitious project in September 2023 to raise £11,000 for a secure bike shelter at his school.
This shelter, now completed, will accommodate up to 50 bikes and is a direct response to the lack of secure storage, which discouraged students from cycling or scooting to school.
“I’ve always loved cycling, and there was nowhere to leave bikes,” Clem said. “I know a lot of other students who love cycling as well, and I wanted to change that.”
A community effort
Clem’s fundraising journey has been nothing short of inspiring. From a 26-mile challenge completed over 26 days to raffles, clothing collections, and even a Boxing Day duck race, Clem’s determination has raised over £9,000 so far. Local groups and businesses, including The Vale of Belvoir Lions, Belvoir Rotary, St Mary’s Church, and the Bottesford Institute, rallied behind him with grants and contributions.
Local funeral directors, A WLymn, have also donated £1,000 on the back of Clem's 3 Peak Challlenge of Bottesford.
The project also caught the attention of RPS in Newark and other local professionals. Recognising the complexities of the project, RPS stepped in to provide essential expertise. “Without the company’s professional understanding of these constructions, Clem’s hopes and dreams would never have been realised,” said Phil Mabbitt from RPS, who has served as the project manager.
Overcoming personal challenges
Clem’s story is even more remarkable given the personal challenges he has faced. Diagnosed with a rare neurological condition at the age of 9, Clem’s balance and coordination have been significantly affected. While he cannot ride a standard bike, his trusty trike allows him to enjoy cycling and travel to school. However, the absence of a proper shelter meant leaving his trike exposed to the elements.
This personal experience inspired Clem’s mission to create a safe and dry space for bikes, trikes, and scooters, encouraging more students to cycle to school and promoting a more active lifestyle.
Clem's vision realised
With construction now completed, Clem’s dream is now a reality. The project is set to reduce traffic congestion on Barkestone Lane and encourage sustainable transport, benefiting students and the wider community. Clem’s efforts have drawn admiration from all corners, and he expressed his gratitude, saying, “I feel joyful and thankful for everyone’s support.”
Clem’s determination, combined with community spirit and professional expertise, is turning his vision into a transformative project that will leave a lasting impact. RPS is proud to have played a part in making Clem’s dream come true.
