Dublin Airport’s Terminal One gets Major Extension

RPS has been responsible for the development from inception through to outline design, planning submission and tender issue for construction. The role has also involved stakeholder consultation, value management, project management and operation/construction logistics management. With planning approval secured RPS will now be responsible for overseeing the detailed design and construction of the project.

RPS was appointed by the Dublin Airport Authority to carry out the management, design development and contract administration of the Terminal 1 Extension at Dublin Airport as part of a consortium. The airside terminal extension is designed to improve passenger circulation space and comfort in the terminal areas and will consist of arrivals and departures facilities on two levels plus a mezzanine. There will also be ancillary support accommodation including additional check-in areas with baggage facilities, retail and restaurant/bars on the mezzanine level.

The overall project cost is €55m and work is expected to be completed in 2009. RPS is acting as the project manager on the scheme and is providing structural, civil and fire engineering services in addition to acting as the PSDS (Project Supervisor Design Stage).

The project is an aggressive fast track programme driven by the challenging aspirations of the DAA management to open the new facility in mid 2009 to meet dramatic increases in passenger numbers. In facilitating this process RPS are managing a two stage Design - Manage - Construct procurement route specifically adapted to the Irish market conditions.

The civil and structural engineering works involve the outline design of a 1100 tonne structural steel frame supported on concrete foundations, the engineering for the fritted glazed façade and the utility services diversions/reinstatement for the airside compound. RPS is also carrying out the fire strategy and engineering for the terminal extension building.

Other projects that RPS is responsible for include the utilities contract (including sustainability assessments, waste management planning and environmental management), the planning aspects of the new northern runway at Dublin Airport, the R132 and the strategic planning for stormwater run off at the airport.

The work will be carried out in phases – with the first elements becoming available early this year. The project – which will be self-funding due to its additional retail income – will be completed by the summer of 2009.
