RPS floating LiDAR buoy reaches stage 3 maturity based on Carbon Trust roadmap
An independent review shows RPS meets demanding stage 3 benchmarks for buoy reliability and accuracy, boosting confidence in wind resource data acquired for clients and project partners.
Gaining the highest level of accreditation
RPS’ Metocean team announces that its buoy design has now been certified to stage 3 of the Carbon Trust roadmap maturity levels.
This validation takes RPS to the highest level achievable under the Roadmap, which provides an industry recognised mechanism to ensure commercial reliability and acceptability of data acquired by floating LiDAR, and its application in the financial assessment of likely wind farm generation performance.
The RPS fleet of floating LiDAR buoys measures wind resource and metocean data to inform offshore development, which relies on accurate and valid data.
As part of the stage 3 certification process, data collected by the buoy was independently reviewed by consultants Frazer-Nash and Multiversum. To achieve accreditation, the quality and availability of the data measured by the buoys was assessed from a number of trials over various timeframes, at different locations, and from commercial deployments. The data needed to meet demanding performance criteria, including demonstrating validity over a range of locations and environmental conditions.
Murray Burling, RPS' Executive Director, Metocean Science & Technology says, “Our Floating LiDAR buoy design was informed by more than 40 years of metocean consultancy experience.”
"Our commitment to providing our clients with cost-effective data at the highest quality is at the core of our design. We are delighted that our buoys have attained a Stage 3 rating, giving our clients further confidence that their most important decisions can be informed by the best available wind resource and metocean data.”
“I am very proud of our team for their unwavering commitment to excellence in design, manufacturing, deployment, and analysis over the past 7 years.”
RPS floating LiDAR buoys have collected high-quality data around the world since 2018. During commercial deployment, they have achieved over 95% data return, including during extreme events such as typhoons and hurricanes. Designed and manufactured in Australia, they are deployed and managed by our global teams based in Australia, the US and the UK.
