The Integrated Settlement: A trailblazing moment for the West Midlands?
Mayor Richard Parker was elected in May 2024 to lead the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), which serves a population of approximately 2.9 million. The WMCA received significant funding in the Autumn 2024 Budget as part of the first Integrated Settlements, and the English Devolution White Paper from December 2024 outlines further powers for Strategic Authorities. This positions the Mayor and the WMCA at the forefront of delivering the opportunities presented by the largest transfer of power from Westminster to England's regions this century.
In this briefing note, Jacob Bonehill, Director – Planning, sets out the details of the Integrated Settlement, key proposals from the White Paper relating to the built environment sector, and insights on potential risks and opportunities.
