Challenge
In 2011 Satterley Property Group began the development of new beachside residential development, Dalyellup Beach Estate, in the south of Western Australia. The masterplanned community has been designed to ultimately house up to 11,000 residents.
With naturally occurring acid sulfate soils found in the area, RPS environmental scientists were engaged to provide advice and treatment solutions to enable the progression of the development without causing harm to the natural environment.

Solution
To ensure the site’s readiness for construction, developing appropriate sewer and drainage infrastructure is an important step. Supporting earthworks and dewatering operations, RPS consultants provided acid sulfate soil and groundwater treatment supervision to align with the site’s acid sulfate soil management plan (ASSMP). Careful management of these operations resulted in no substantive impact to the natural environment.
Following the success of this operation, our team was commissioned by Western Australia water supplier, Water Corporation, to prepare a detailed dewatering management plan (DMP) for an adjacent site. This was to mitigate the potential environmental risks associated with direct or indirect disturbance of actual and potential acid sulfate soil and potential acid sulfate soils on the site during dewatering activities.
The DMP presented relevant groundwater water quality baseline data and detailed a management program for the excavation and dewatering of soil during earthworks for the development and pump station.
Our team also provided an operating strategy for contingency measures and responses to be implemented should there be breaches of the nominated triggers, including management measures for acid sulfate soils and groundwater.
Dalyellup Beach Estate was named the winner in the master-planned development category for the 2019 WA Urban Development Institute of Australia Awards for Excellence.
