What makes smart cities truly smart?

Smart cities help us identify potential problems before they become major issues. To identify patterns, draw insight and generate value at scale, we need visibility across these intersecting systems and services. This is why a common data language is necessary. Upholding best practice in the information standard – ISO 19650 – is the foundation for enabling smart cities at scale.

With the data language as the skeleton, artificial intelligence (AI) is the brain; helping us identify patterns and trends that would otherwise go unnoticed. From roads and bridges, to buildings, water supply systems, and other public utilities, the applications are endless.

Meet our experts

Mark Costello – Director of Digital Design, BIM & Technical Services

Mark is an industry leader in building information modelling (BIM) with over twenty years’ experience of large infrastructural projects at all stages. He has delivered many lectures and seminars in the UK and Ireland on BIM processes, and is currently managing the delivery of major roads, water, pharmaceutical, healthcare and education projects. He is a Fellow Member of the BRE Academy and responsible for achieving BIM Level 2 Business Systems Certification for RPS in 2015 and the latest UKAS accredited ISO 19650 International Standard Business Systems Certification in 2023.
Patrick Rath – Senior Associate Engineer

Patrick is an Associate within the Water Environment segment of RPS who specialises in Advanced Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning and Automation. He graduated from Queens University Belfast with a Master’s in Civil Engineering. His role at RPS involves spearheading innovative solutions across the business using the latest state-of-the-art technologies. He is a member of our Global Community of Practice for Advanced Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, hosting weekly Data Science sessions for learning and engagement across the team in the Belfast office. He also lectures Civil Engineering master’s students at Queen’s University Belfast on statistical and deterministic rainfall runoff flood estimation techniques.
David Goldsby – Chief Technology Officer

David is a dynamic and trusted technology leader with over 20 years’ industry experience of delivering digital solutions within the architectural, engineering, construction (AEC) and utilities sectors. As the Chief Technology Officer for RPS, David is responsible for RPS’ digital strategy and leading our Software Engineering Development team who provide industry leading and innovative solutions. He previously worked in Microsoft as the Account CTO for the Built Environment sector, responsible for the technology strategy for global customers across the whole AEC lifecycle especially in Digital Twin, Data and AI. David continuously evangelises for new disruptive innovative and emerging technologies whilst remaining true to the client’s key focuses and drivers.

We’re currently working on projects like Metrolink in Ireland, where RPS has been appointed to deliver the Advance Works Design Programme on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland. This transformative piece of public transport infrastructure will feature a modern, high-capacity metro railway with 16 stations, linking Dublin Airport and the Greater Dublin Area to the city centre.
